Biography

Based in Norfolk, England, I am a part time professional photographer with a day job as a cyber security specialist working in local government.

In early 2013, I discovered a new found passion, photography.  Having only previously owned two basic film cameras and without a clue about any of the fundamentals of photography I purchased my first DSLR camera and this was where my journey began.

What initially sparked my interest was some of the amazing images of our night sky, photographs of the milky way, deep space objects and of course Aurora Borealis or the northern lights…. I was instantly addicted.  However, I soon found out that with no understanding of how a camera actually worked it was going to be a very steep learning curve!

Everything I know about photography has been self-taught, I have had work published in various media outlets, I have been photographing weddings for 3 years and have also been planning and running both one to one and group photography workshops for over 4 years with Through the Lens Workshops.

Last year for me was huge, I was selected as an official brand ambassador for UK based photographic and cinematic filter manufacturer Formatt Hitech

I think this is endorses both my knowledge of photography, the application of filters within my work and ultimately, the quality of the work that I produce.  This UK based manufacturers products were used during the filming of Star Wars Rogue One and many other large-scale media productions, can you get much more of a testament to the quality of their filter solutions than that?  With those sorts of accolades, I am incredibly proud to have been selected as an ambassador to represent the brand.

Camera Details

Lenses

I have a selection of lenses that cover all of my current aspects of photography:

Sigma Art 14mm f/1.8
Sony 16-35mm GM f/2.8
Sony 24-105mm G f/4
Sony 70-200mm G f/2.8
Sony 90mm G macro
Sony 200-600mm G F/5.6-6.3

Filters

I have a large selection of Formatt Hitech ND and grad filters which I had invested in prior to being selected as an ambassador.  I like many others originally started out with Cokin filters and very quickly upgraded them to LEE, but after trying the Formatt Hitech Firecrest filters I changed over to them due to the improved quality they offer in terms of both neutrality and image sharpness.

What are my go to filters?  I’d have to say the 3 stop (0.9) Firecrest Ultra soft edge grad, 2 stop (0.6) Firecrest Ultra hard edge grad along with the 6 stop (1.8), 10 stop (3.0) and 13 stop (3.9) ND filters.  Add to that the more specialist filters such as the 3 stop (0.9) reverse grad for sunrise/sunset and of course the Firecrest Nightscape filter for astro.

Other Equipment

My current tripod of choice is my Benro TMA38CL with a with the Benro geared head and a Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 as a backup and loaning out to clients on workshops .  For my long exposure and timelapse photography I use the Hahnel Captur Pro.  I also have the Sky Watcher Star Adventurer star tracker for photographing deep space objects and galaxies.  DJI Mavic Pro 2 drone.
